課程概述

本課程特邀請美國加州大學戴維斯分校榮譽校長暨傑出教授 Larry Vanderhoef 至本院開課,課程內容在闡述生命科學與人類社會息息相關之重要議題。期能增進修課學生對於生命科學與人類社會相關之重要議題的認識,並提升學生之國際視野。

上課時間及地點:2012/10/31-2012/11/19,每週一三五晚間AB堂,於生命科學館四樓4B教室。

課程概述:

Politicians and policy makers are usually not students of biology. Rather they are likely to come out of social sciences and law. There are, though, certain biological facts and principles that they must understand if they are going to legislate wisely. This course presents a few of the most important biological issues among them.

1 10/31 Course introduction; scientific research

2 11/02 Earth’s place in the universe. Man’s place in the tree of life.

3 11/05 Evolution, artificial selection.

4 11/07 Darwin’s search for nature’s breeder. Human Evolution.

5 11/09 Mendelian genetics. Genes: what are they? Where are they? How do they work?

6 11/12 Cancer (uncontrolled cell division), our immune system, and HIV/A.I.D.S. (the deadliest
viral infection).

7 11/14 Impaired fluid flow in humans and plants: heart attacks, strokes and Pierce’s disease.

8 11/16 Human fertility and multiple births: stem cells – simple biology, moral dilemma

9 11/19 Organic farming and foods, genetic engineering 

課程目標
期能增進修課學生對於生命科學與人類社會相關之重要議題的認識,並提升學生之國際視野。 
課程要求
Will be based on participation in class discussion. Extra credit will be given for a brief 1,000-word paper, due on November 14, 2012 Topic to be chosen by the student and approved by Professor Vanderhoef.

Textbook: There will be no textbook. Rather, a number of recent articles drawn from journals, books, and newspapers will be made available to the students on the first day of class.
Reference: The most useful references would be biology texts for non-biology majors. The best of these is “Biology: Today and Tomorrow, by Starr, Evers and Starr. Cengage Learning Inc.
